WGSB STEM Ambassador (All Years)
This is a new initiative that will give all students who apply the opportunity to work with other students within the STEM areas they enjoy. Applications must be handed in by Friday 10th October 2014, and all applicants will attend the first training sessions on Monday 20th October 2014. If you are interested then click here.
STEM Leadership Awards (All Years)
These nationally recognised awards are open to students from year 1-13 so everyone can get involved. To apply for the award you must take part in a STEM related activity, interview a Scientist, Technologist, Engineer or Mathematician and write a report about the interview and send the report along with a letter of application and application form to Primary Engineer, the organisation that oversees the award. Finally you must take part in at least one activity where you can help students your age or younger take part in a STEM activity and there will be lots of opportunities for you to help during the year. If you are interested you can get more details from http://www.leadersaward.com/index.php then talk to Mrs Smith about registering.
The information below can help you apply for the award.
Letter
All students must apply to be a Leader for STEM by writing a short letter explaining why they would like to become one. Tips for writing a letter can be found in the downloads.
Registration Form
All Secondary and Advanced students must then complete a registration form. (For Primary students, teachers can complete the registration form).
Report
Students interview a STEM professional and make notes during the interview (this can be videoed if pre-arranged but will require a publicity release sheet which can be found here). Students turn interview notes into a report of their experience which must be 650 words for KS3&4 (Secondary), or 850 words for KS5 (Advanced).
How to Enter
The letter, application form and report then need to be emailed to [email protected] This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Please note: all three parts must be completed in order to achieve the award. Upon completion of the award, a certificate will be issued to the student and the school.
You can achieve a pass, merit or distinction for your application. The marking grid is below -

Arkwright Scholarship (Year 11)
The Arkwright Scholarships Trust administers one of the most prestigious scholarship schemes in the UK.
They identify and nurture future leaders in engineering and related areas of design. They do this by awarding Arkwright Engineering Scholarships, through a rigorous selection process, to high-ability students in Year 11.
Engineering Scholarships support students through their A Levels and encourage students to pursue engineering at university and to take up careers in engineering or related areas of design.

Extra Curricular Activities at WGSB
The DT department at WGSB has always maintained exceptional standards in lessons, but now students can get involved with several engineering projects in their free time. Multiple clubs run at WGSB during lunch time and after school, meaning that our students have more opportunities than ever before to hone their engineering and design skills.
Steam Car Club
Beginning in March 2012, students will be given the opportunity to build and refine miniature steam cars. These are popular attractions in the WGSB tent at the Dartford Industrial Heritage Day, but are built competitively by engineers to try to build and design the most efficient steam car. Students will be given a basic design, and through testing and modification, will get a shot at the world record for distance travelled on 20ml of methylated spirit. Think you're up to the challenge? Speak to Mrs Smith to find out more!
F1 in Schools
Over the last few years, the school has been exceedingly successful in the F1 in Schools competition. The 'Speeding Snails' team even holds a record for their run in the F1 category. Students taking part get an opportunity to use their CAD/CAM skills, and experience what it is like to be part of a real motorsport team. Students wishing to take part should speak to Mr Winter or a current team captain for details.
